What do weighted products actually do?
Weighted products provide deep pressure input - a firm, gentle, evenly distributed weight that activates the body's proprioceptive system. This sends calming signals to the nervous system, similar to the feeling of a firm hug.
The result is a reduction in anxiety, hyperactivity and sensory overload, and an increase in focus and body awareness. It's one of the most widely used and research-supported strategies in occupational therapy.
Could a weighted product help my child?
Weighted tools are most helpful for children who seek heavy input — those who crash into things, love tight hugs, struggle to sit still or feel anxious and unsettled.
They're commonly recommended for children with ADHD, autism, sensory processing differences and anxiety. That said, every child is different — if you're unsure, a lap pad or shoulder wrap is a low-cost, low-commitment way to try deep pressure at home before investing in anything larger.
Can my child use weighted tools at school?
Yes — and many do. A weighted lap pad sits discreetly across a child's legs during desk work, providing calming input without drawing attention. Weighted shoulder wraps can be used during carpet time or transitions.
Teachers find that children using weighted tools during focused tasks are often more settled, less fidgety and better able to engage with learning.
Many schools purchase these as part of their classroom sensory toolkit, and they can also often be funded through NDIS core supports.
