Glen Eira City Council Sensory Room Project

Case study example of one of our recent sensory room fit-outs.

The Brief

Glen Eira City Council engaged The Sensory Specialist to help design and fit out a sensory room for the Caulfield Park Pavilion — a space that can be hired by local groups, organisations and individuals.

The goal was to create a welcoming, functional and inclusive room that felt calming, engaging and accessible for community members of all ages and abilities, with a strong focus on supporting neurodiverse individuals.

The Process

  • Initial discovery call to understand the project scope and intended use of the sensory room
  • On-site visit to assess the space and explore practical layout possibilities
  • Close collaboration with the Glen Eira City Council project manager to understand the vision and desired outcomes
  • Product brainstorming, consultation and feedback based on what would work best in the space
  • Final recommendations curated to deliver tactile, visual and calming sensory input
  • Purchase order approved and items delivered to site

Inside the Sensory Room

  • Dimmable lighting for a calmer and more flexible environment
  • Interactive lighting including an LED bubble tube and fibre optic lighting
  • Soft floor furnishings including the Mooshy Mat
  • Tactile elements including felt acoustic wall panels for sound dampening
  • A range of fidget and sensory tools for different age groups
  • A variety of educational and mindful-based toys

A Meaningful Local Project

As a Bentleigh resident, former teacher and disability advocate, it was incredibly meaningful to help create a purposeful sensory space within my own local community. It was an honour to be involved in one of the first council-based projects of this kind within Victoria.

Seeing the room officially opened alongside the Mayor and councillors made this project even more special, and highlighted the importance of creating inclusive spaces that better support families and individuals of all abilities.

Featured in the Glen Eira City Council Newspaper

The completed sensory room was also featured in the Glen Eira City Council newspaper, helping shine a light on the importance of inclusive community spaces and the growing need for environments that better support sensory regulation and accessibility.
