The lycra resistance tunnel by Sensory Matters is 3 metres of ultimate fun!
The lycra resistance tunnel was designed to provide proprioceptive feedback while using resistance and deep pressure touch stimulation for sensory seekers. Using the lycra tunnel also helps children practice their gross motor skills such as crawling, core body strength and balance and coordination.
The lycra material of the tunnel provides medium resistance when a child crawls through the tunnel by themselves, while a heavy resistance load can be experienced when a child pushes a ball (of around 55cm diameter) through the tunnel.
Deep Pressure Touch Stimulation (DPTS) can stimulate the release of serotonin (endorphins) in the brain, in turn helping children and adults become calm and relaxed from the sensory input. The pressure provided by the lycra around the child’s body can provide this deep pressure stimulation.
The lycra tunnel can be used on a smooth floor surface such as floorboards or grass, or the surface under the tunnel can be varied to include items such as pillows/mattresses/mats etc to provide a different base to crawl over. The children can go through forwards, backwards or sideways and many children like to stop in the middle and just 'chill' while receiving the deep pressure touch stimulation.
The lycra tunnel has 4 large handles (2 at each end) for other children and/or adults to hold while another child goes through the tunnel. It is also possible to place two of the handles under heavy objects such as table legs to hold the tunnel in place, which means the activity can be done more independently as adult involvement is not required once the tunnel is set up.
