My child finds it hard to sit still in class

The first step is understanding what your child’s brain and body are seeking.

Some children need gentle movement in order to stay focused. Rather than expecting them to sit completely still, active seating tools can give them the movement their body craves while helping them remain engaged with learning.

Tools such as a wobble stool, wobble cushion or foot fidget can help children move quietly while seated, reducing the need to leave their chair and minimising disruption in the classroom.

My child finds it difficult to concentrate for long periods

Some children lose focus more quickly than others, especially when their body is craving sensory input or an outlet for restless energy.

Providing an appropriate support tool can help children regulate without drawing attention to themselves. This might include a calming sensory tool, a visual timer, or a reward-based strategy that helps break tasks into manageable steps.

When the body feels supported and expectations are clear, the brain often finds it easier to stay engaged with the task at hand.

My child is being disruptive in class. Help!

What can sometimes look like “disruptive behaviour” may actually be a child who is dysregulated, overwhelmed, confused or seeking comfort.

The key is to work out what helps your child feel calm, safe and regulated again. For one child, that may be reducing noise with earmuffs. For another, it may be oral sensory input or the grounding comfort of a weighted item.

Every child is different, and often the right support comes from trialling a few tools until you find what truly helps.
